Over a required period of several months to a year or more, the monthly fees typically exceed the installation cost, and the total is substantial. For someone already paying for DUI school, court costs, fines, and increased insurance, this is often the expense that breaks the budget.
There is an indigency provision in Florida for drivers who can't afford the device, which can reduce the cost for those who qualify. It isn't automatic and it has to be applied for.
One thing worth planning around: the requirement doesn't pause because you stop driving. If the term runs while the device is installed, taking the car off the road doesn't shorten it.
