Do I get a rental car while mine is repaired?

Short Answer
Usually yes, from the at-fault driver's insurer or your own rental coverage — with limits.

Loss of use is a recognized element of a property damage claim, so the at-fault insurer generally covers a reasonable rental during repairs.

The practical problems.

Liability has to be accepted before the at-fault insurer will authorize a rental. In a disputed case, that can take days or weeks, during which you have no vehicle.

There are limits. A daily rate cap, and a duration limited to reasonable repair time — not however long the shop actually takes.

Total loss cases are shorter. Rental coverage typically ends a defined period after the total loss offer is made, not when you've found a replacement.

Your own rental coverage avoids the delay if you have it, and you can pursue reimbursement afterward.

Class matters. The insurer covers a comparable vehicle, not an upgrade.

Keep every receipt including rideshare and alternative transportation while a rental is being arranged. Those are recoverable too.

Check whether your own policy has rental coverage. It avoids the argument. ---
